Magmasoft® 3-D Computer Simulation Demonstrates Its
Ability to Prevent a Die Casting Design Horror Story



Since CWM put the advanced Magmasoft software simulation system to work, its accurate thermal and metal-flow predictions prior to tooling design and prototyping have helped achieve first-piece production success with some especially challenging die cast part designs.

One recent project was a particularly dramatic example of the prevention of what could have been a tooling and production horror story. The product designers had developed what they believed was an excellent design for a successful die casting and were anxious to proceed. CWM engineers were wary of certain part features and recommended a detailed Magmasoft simulation analysis, using the customer's CAD data, before proceeding with tooling design. The modeling results not only confirmed CWM's suspicions, but demonstrated that the original design would have resulted in production dies incapable of being modified for successful production.

Component design changes recommended were agreed to and new simulations were run. The final production part met all customer requirements.

OEM interest in buying from producers commited to "green" operations has moved to mandates by many of them. CWM, as a producer of high-precision die cast components in recyclable alloys, has been ahead of its industry in this green movement:

CWM was the first die casting company to achieve ISO 14001 environmental management system registration and is still one of a small number that is so certified; First custom producer of any kind to be accepted into the EPA's National Environmental Performance Track Program and achieve repeated special EPA recognition; First of any component producers to be named by the EPA as a "Green Biz Leader" company in its EPA-affilated program. CWM is a member of the EPA's Sustainable Industries Partnership Program to aid other die casting companies in developing advanced environmental systems, enabling them to become ISO 14001 certified.

And products die cast by CWM are recyclable, all made with significant amounts of recycled alloy— 100% in the case of Al parts.
