"Functional Build" Approach to Part Production Offers A Design News component production article discusses how Japanese engineers have embraced the counter-intuitive concept of “functional build” vs. the widely practiced “conventional” build methodology based on precise, measurable tolerances on virtually all dimensions, i.e., so-called "perfect parts." Using the "functional" concept, many OEMs are now making end-product assemblies at lower costs with greater customer satisfaction on reliability. When You Spec "Ultra Rugged" in a Precision, Lightweight Portable Unit, a CWM Mg Housing can be Your Best Choice ![]() ![]() The new GR-3 GPS satellite tracking unit from Topcon Positioning Systems is a major breakthrough in technology. Project managers at Topcon wanted the GR-3 enclosure to be as advanced as the technology inside: ultra rugged and durable but lightweight for field use; waterproof; dustproof, with fail-safe EMI shielding. A high-tech CWM hot-chamber magnesium die casting was the clear housing choice-- see details in a CWM Case Study PDF. Implementation of Lean Manufacturing Practices Taken to Next Level with Best Practices Outreach In an aggressive outreach to other manufacturing plants pursuing best lean practices, CWM has moved from intensive investigation, through remote on-site training, to incorporation of its own new, formalized lean manufacturing in-house training program. During the past year CWM has examined in depth the successful lean program at the plant of one of its largest customers, with a seven-year background in the formal application of lean manufacturing principles. Six CWM team members participated in comprehensive 3-day lean training sessions incorporating Kaisan events and Value Stream Mapping. The program, now operating with weekly sessions at CWM, has already demonstrated its effectiveness in revealing improvement opportunities.
